Garmin GPS on my Samsung i780
yewjin | September 4, 2008I have been using the Samsung i780 for a couple of months now. I was using the i600 before I switch to this newer version and before the Samsungs, I was a die hard Nokia user. At first I was skeptical about using Samsung but when I was shopping around for a pda phone, Samsung seemed to fit my specs. I needed one with keyboards on it and I narrowed down to either the Blackberry or Samsung and Samsung came up tops in terms of features - GPS, Wi Fi, HSDPA, Camera, etc.

Only about a month back did I seriously considered using GPS on my Samsung. I downloaded Garmin software and Malaysia Singapore map. Cracked it. Shhh… and wah la! I found it so useful with some lady’s voice directing me to my destination. You could even find restaurants, petrol stations, other cities, etc which comes loaded in this map. It is the perfect tool for me and getting lost is a thing of the past. A lot of people say that our KL maps aren’t that accurate as our roads changed so frequently. My answer would be yes but basically it gets you somewhere there rather than being lost miles aways. The directions are very clear with night and day view on my mobile and it comes with a voice direction ensuring that you turn left or right whenever you have to. If you missed that turning, it would reroute your route and find an alternative way back to your destination.
The only set back about Garmin or my phone’s GPS that it takes quite a while to find a satelite signal.
Overall the Samsung i780 is the almost perfect phone for me. Well frankly I think it is the best phone so far. With TFT touch screen and QWERTY keyboard with mouse functionality (?) running on Windows Mobile, this Samsung keeps me on schedule, reminds me of my tasks, appointments and ensures that my calls and messages are taken or typed with ease and doesn’t hang like an O2.
The only set back I can see is the battery life - about 1 1/2 days lifespan depending on usage and camera - taking pictures seems bad or am I taking pictures wrongly… hmmm…
Anyone who wants the Garmin software on their phone kindly drop me a comment.
